Spring planting!
I do not have a green thumb. In fact, I killed a plant that was supposed to be un-killable. So, reader be ware as I talk about planting in this post. I recall a simple third grade science experiment we conducted to plant a bean seed in a cup and watch it grow. The point was to teach an antsy kid how to patiently watch the growth phases and decide what to do so the plant grew to its full potential. How do you get the most out of simple bean seed? Add a little bit of water, take it out of the sun, add a smidge of growth supplements? Whatever the combination was, it was to get the best out of the seed.
Tax season is ending and summer vacations are on the horizon. In the interim, we can review all of our non-operating accounts and decide what we need for them to excel. Could our portfolio benefit from the addition of fixed income investments to balance out the equities? Should you start contributing the same amount each month to a mutual fund and utilize the dollar cost averaging strategy?
Or are you considering opening a savings account and are curious about how much to contribute? I am a firm believer that the starting amount doesn’t matter nearly as much as establishing a savings habit. Plant the $50.00 seed, then add more as your spending plan allows. Watching the growth over time will help to inform your decisions moving forward.
Are you a parent of young kids and are considering a 529 college savings fund? This savings option is available in all states and DC, and the accumulated funds can be applied to a wide range of college expenses. Note that some of the plans have a minimum initial deposit that can range from zero to a couple grand. The beneficiary can also be changed if the original beneficiary does not use the funds. Start now with a little and watch it grow!
So many beautiful flowers to fill your financial garden. It’s spring; start planting and find out what grows. We are here to help answer questions about where to start and available strategies.
